Just to let you know why interest is around 7% from your calculations. Remember that much of the money borrowed came years ago, when interest rates were higher. Since a lot of government debt is in the form of bonds, the interest rates are set and fairly inflexible. There may be ways to reduce their interest rate but it's not like they can just renegotiate their mortgage like an average person.

I think this story has traction. The stimulus spending (and its publicity campaign) tie it to the ultra-cynical Conservative election strategy in ways that are being felt on a local level across the country. It is a horrendously vast use of taxpayer money for partisan interests - at the callous detriment to sound economic management for the whole country, of course - and it will be their undoing, in time. CO2 may be an odorless gas, but the smell of corruption with this "economic action plan" is pungent.

Welcome aboard, rural. You and I seem to come at the party from similar angles. I find reasonable people of various political stripes tend to gravitate towards the May Greens, given the disappointing alternatives.

I hope the party's influence continues to grow; however, I also hope that growth doesn't enable the Conservatives to continue winning elections, against the wishes of roughly two thirds of the voters. Luckily, living in a Montreal island riding, this is not a local concern for me.

I use GBTel.ca and have been quite happy with it; it's wireless, but very stable and reliable, pretty good uptime (better than my city friends get with DSL) and the speed is decent enough for practical purposes. Also, unlike that little USB scam Rogers and Bell are flogging, there's no bitcap, so you can listen to more than a few hours of internet radio -- you can listen all day if you want, even leave it on by accident with no worry.

The monthly cost is comparable to DSL (after the fine-print "for first three months" clause) and best of all, their promise for installation costs is solid: you pay a one-time fee and that includes your equipment, the antenna installation, and in my case even covered them having to replace a stack of radios and put up a new tower to get to me!

It's also two young guys, real people, something you don't get with other outfits, and they aren't out to soak us and vanish with the booty, they just want to build themselves a stable, long-term livelihood. That should be worth some consideration too :)

Now that's a good idea! Rural, I disagree with your statement about keeping politics out of the local arena. Politics IS and cannot be kept out of a stamp collectors club, let alone re-distribution of resources. If you meant Party politics, I can tell you as an avid follower of municipal politics, political party's would be very useful in helping to define local politicians, and keep them accountable. There are some very damned unsavoury people holding office at local levels, who campaign on good looks, and apple pie, and then rape the public at the behest of their backers. Party politics would put their sinecures at risk if they had to be held accountable to a Perty that actually paid attention to their voting record, which, unfortunately, the electorate cannot be bothered to do.
If the Green Party were to endorse such an association, then we would be a decade away from majority Green Gvt. Federally, and/or Provincially.

Laura, Scott... I must agree that TV is becoming a thing of the past, "reporters" are increasingly getting their "news" from on line, often from "citizen" reporters (bloggers). So long as the net remains "open" this will in the long run probably be good. But, out here in the boonies its tough without high speed!

Ottawa's "A" Channel is gone too. Overnight. Just like that. And while I do think it's sad, I have to agree with Scott, web-based, interactive, on-demand tv is the way of the future and citizen reporting likely is as well.

Not commenting on A channel, as they did seem to dedicate a lot of energy towards local reporting, but I have to tell you about a more disturbing trend in news reporting recently.

A friend of mine was featured in the New York Times - tons of other papers around the world re-printed the article word-for-word under their own names! What is that all about? Is that laziness? Lack of funds? Honestly, how many reporters are out there being paid for original, investigative reporting?

You know, if that's the way they're going to run EI, we should be given the opportunity to opt out and set up a fund privately (sort of like the Quebec drug insurance policy, which is mandatory). I wouldn't suggest this if not for the fact the government has been using surpluses from EI to help out the balance sheet. While I agree on the need for built-in incentives to promote actively finding gainful employment, you're right to point out how some of these rules are simply unfair.

Senator Elaine McCoy was on CBC radio (Ottawa Morning) today talking about starting a website for Canadians to have their say about how the economic situation and resulting $40 billion stimulus package is affecting Canadians.

There's nothing about it yet on her site yet - www.albertasenator.ca (which is all in flash so you probably can't even view it) but she invited Canadians to call her office and tell her what they think at 1 800 267 7362.
